Puppets on Parade: Bainbridge Island
Wednesday, June 23, 2004

Phew! What a day! Lots of volunteers showed up to get involved. We now have 4 alien heads under construction. The first puppet body was created today by Alex, an industrious 8th grader, and a group of girls sculpted a very creative alien with many eyes. Kathe started an excellent, enormous head with many eyes made over balloons. Some wonderful arms were painted by Henri and his mom, and Dominique is sewing the first puppet costume.

There are still many masks and stars to be painted, and lots and lots of paper mache to do in order to finish the heads. So come on down! Remaining days of the workshop are 6/24, 25, 26, 29, 30 and 7/1-2. And we need lots of people to be in the parade carrying puppets and the like, so don't be shy, come on down and volunteer!

We need some metal coffee cans. Not huge, but tall and narrow, like Chock Full O'Nuts cans. If you have some plese bring them to the store!

Come one, come all to make puppets big and small. Puppets on Parade is a free community art project for people of all ages. Over the course of two weeks, we will create a cast of characters on the theme: "Taking Flight." The puppets will be made out of paper mache and simple materials, and there are jobs for people of every skill level (children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). No experience is necessary. We'll have all the stuff you'll need to create, and local arists will be on hand for guidance.

The puppet workshop will run June 20 - July 1, 2006, every Tuesday-Saturday from 1-5 p.m. On July 4th, we will parade our puppets as an entry in the Bainbridge Island "Grand Old Fourth" parade.
